Founder / History
Bettina Duval is the President and Founder of CALIFORNIALIST, a political fundraising network to elect Democratic women to California state government. CALIFORNIALIST was founded in 2002 and has helped elect 56 women to statewide offices in California. In addition, five of the women that CALIFORNIALIST helped early in their careers in California politics are now serving in Congress. Bettina believes that it is important to build a pipeline of qualified women in order to achieve equality in our government.
Bettina Duval initially brought together a group of 15 friends concerned about the overall decline in the number of women serving in elective office. The professional women came together to create a mechanism that would move beyond just rhetoric. The Founder’s Circle wanted to create a dependable connection for money. Membership quickly grew to 136 and continues to grow annually.
Bettina serves on the Board of Governors for the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Monica, is Chair of the University of California, Santa Barbara Parent Fund, is a member of the Berkeley Hall School Board of Trustees, is a member of the Women’s Political Committee, a member of NARAL Privacy Political Action Committee, is a member of the Everychild Foundation, and a Past President of the Junior League of Los Angeles. Bettina is also a founding board member of ACCION, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing college counseling to Latino high school students.
Bettina received her BA in Rhetoric from the University of California, Berkeley. As Campus Coordinator of the Associated Students of UC Berkeley Student Body, her partnership with the League of Women Voters put an end to ballot tampering and other campaign violations, and recreated a fair and just electoral process.
Bettina is a mother of four: Bennett, Elizabeth, Annie, and Christopher, all of whom share her passion for political advocacy. She resides in Santa Monica with her husband Glenn, who also loves politics.
